Installation failed (Pane is dead) - error running the kickstart script

Problem Description:

We run some compute nodes (services) on top of HPE Server. We noticed an incident where the compute node was offline and checking the Onboard Administrator we noticed some issues:

On the .NET Integrated Remote Console, there is the following alarm:

" There was an error running the kickstart script "

iLo remote console.png

The system is healthy. There are no alarms on iLO:

iLO storage - physical view.jpg

We can see on the smart array on the Physical Devices configuration no physical devices are associated, the physical device is not detecting the disk and it should. But, like I said there are no issues on iLo.

Troubleshooting has been done so far:

  • Confirmed the system is health
  • Tried to turn off the server, pressing it for 20s, and then putting it back on.
  • Tried to turn off the server and reinserted the disk
  • Tried to Change Boot Mode from "UEFI Optimized" to "Legacy"

What can be done in this case to fix the issue?

Hi @STie ,

I wont suspect on hardware components, this may be Linux issue.
Try this-
1) Change "Legacy BIOS mode" to "UEFI mode"
2) Diagnose the disk, even the iLO shows healthy status
3) Update the controller and system firmware to latest version
4) Remove all USB devices connected if any.
5) Review the IML, AMS logs with iLO status after doing the above steps. Let us know if the issue is still persists.

Re: Installation failed (Pane is dead) - error running the kickstart script

Hello HPE support,

Thank you for replying!

1) Change "Legacy BIOS mode" to "UEFI mode"

That was done.

2) Diagnose the disk, even the iLO shows healthy status

What do you mean by that? Can you explain better? I can not take the AHS logs because of the following error "Active Health System Log is inaccessible because it is being used by another application."

3) Update the controller and system firmware to latest version

I updated the firmware to version 2.8.2. What do you mean by Update the controller? Is that a procedure and the newest version?

4) Remove all USB devices connected if any.

There is no USB devices connected to the server

5) Review the IML, AMS logs with iLO status after doing the above steps. Let us know if the issue is still persists.

I don't know which logs are AMS, but as I said the AHS is not available. I'm printing the IMS and iLO logs as I could not find a way to attach as files (on the 03/20 was some actions done by us to try to recover)

Please, let us know which troubleshooting should we take. Should we open an RMA case?

Hi @STie ,

I believe, the server hardware, configuration and firmware are working fine.   It is better to raise a request.

Re: Installation failed (Pane is dead) - error running the kickstart script

@shiva_jr Hello Team,

We replaced the disk, now we can see the physical disk recognized by Intelligent Provisioning, however when I tried to install Cent OS 7 I got the error: No Disk Detected.

Any ideas how to proceed here?
